Editing, Leadership, and Team Building

I started my journalistic career my sophomore year after joining Sports Broadcasting. Over the years I have developed experience and skills within the class and take on a leadership role. I am one of the sports team leaders within my class. My team has to do the sports section of the news and then get the show streamed out on a daily basis. I also have to teach people how to make a video package as well as how to edit them. I learned from different people about how to edit a video package. So I try to teach people on my team what I know (Even though I still have a lot to learn).

Editing, Leadership, and Team Building

While I understand the importance of leadership positions and areas of expertise but I believe this can limit the abilities of a journalist. I am the lead announcer for my schools sports broadcast and one of the team leaders in my sports broadcasting class. I have to mentor the upcoming and young announcers within our program and help them become comfortable when announcing games. I had other upperclassmen teach me about announcing and the process that goes into it. The preparation that goes into games for announcers is a stressful yet rewarding process. I have to schedule interviews with coaches and gather information leading up to games and then I have to pass the information onto my color, which is usually the underclassmen.

Inspiring Friends

In the spring of my sophomore year my class was encouraged to recruit people for Sports Broadcasting for the next year. I asked a friend if he wanted to join broadcasting to submit an application for the class. He got into broadcasting his junior year and has gained great broadcasting skills. I also connected him with an internship to Kearney's local radio station because I knew Brian Watts, the President of 102.7 KPGZ.

Learning from my mistakes

I've made a lot of mistakes as a student journalist. I struggled with the rule of thirds throughout my sophomore and junior year. I had trouble with finding good locations for interviews and had trouble learning how to not sound monotone while anchoring. Learning how to edit packages was something I also struggled with. Finding my voice as a young sports journalist was the biggest struggle I had during my first year of broadcasting. I have improved in these areas and become a better sports journalist. I teach the underclassmen in broadcasting how to do things right on the sports side of things.

This is my first video package that has a lot of problems. The B-roll is very shaky, the flow is not very good, the interview answers are not the greatest. The critiques I mentioned are the things I learned about throughout my time in Sports Broadcasting. Going back if I was to redo this package. I would redo the interviews and find better interview shots. Then I would set up a tripod and not try to run with the team during practice while filming B-roll. Finally, I would make sure that the video package has a smooth flow and story from start to finish.

Stepping up as a Scriptwriter

A good portion of my junior year was focused on writing an accurate and detailed script for a short section of the daily news show. This situation happened because I was the only one who remembered how to write a sports script from the previous year. I checked all the sports related emails as soon as I got to school in the morning. Whenever I had downtime for my morning classes I would grind away at the sports script. Sometimes I was out of town and they needed a sports script , so I wrote it as fast as I could.
